Jane was already in a meeting when I arrived today, so I gathered all my assignments together from my email To Do box, and got to work.
There were some new suggestions for the Website Usability Pre-Survey, so I started on that. I updated the intro, changed a few free-answer questions to multiple choice, and emailed Jane about some of my concerns with the new intro. She arrived at my desk just after I hit send, and we sorted out the trouble to make it shine.
She was also concerned with the length of the combined draft of the email to the biology faculty, so I trimmed that one down to a more appropriate length, as well.
Then I added the Stucki math article and the Summer issue of the Otterbein Towers magazine to the DC for her approval.
I also took a bit of a look at PERL and XML. The New Arrivals page on the website is created by a PERL script which outputs an HTML file, but if it made an XML file, interested people could subscribe to it for updates in their field. I found the key parts of the files, but did not make much headway in deciphering the PERL script’s functions.
So, I moved on to gathering Biology metadata until lunch. After lunch, I downloaded the Open Access articles from the bunch, before heading off to observe a class.
Rares had an FYS class that he was teaching about the Library Website, and how to use it for research for their upcoming papers. He talked about the OneSearch feature, and about Boolean Searching, and did a bit about writing and reading citations. He also showed them how the book searches work, and how to do an advanced search on Google.
After class, I set a summary of the biology papers’ copyright information to Jane, and took another quick look at, with some Google searching, at the PERL and XML.
To finish out the day, I met with Jane again to go over what we had accomplished and what we had on the schedule for next week, especially as the Library is closed on Monday, so I had to adjust my schedule.
She showed me some of the edits she made before approving the Towers and Stucki submissions, and then we went over the Physics articles again, to see what else I needed to fix. Then we spent a few minutes discussing my end of internship presentation.
