I have to login and out at CML, and I’m finding, just like at B&N, I’m pretty terrible at remembering to do so around my lunch break.
Today, my project is the Poindexter Village Construction Journal. First, I created a new ContentDM project, as there are nearly 100 images in this project. I spent most of the morning creating metadata for volume 1, and set them to upload when I went to lunch. After lunch, I created the remaining metadata for volume 2, and got them uploaded as well. Once they were all uploaded, I approved and indexed the whole lot.
I got done a bit earlier than I thought, so I went to Aaron to find my next project. We decided on the Ohio State Journal Index on microfilm. The indexes need to be digitized, organized, metadata created, and uploaded to the collection. Currently there are a few years of digitized book volumes in the online collection. The microfilm collection consists of 7 rolls of microfilm of typed indexes, and around 77 rolls of microfilm of hand-written index cards.
We decided to start with the typed indexes, as they will OCR better, and be much more searchable. So Aaron showed me the microfilm scanner, and the SL Touch program I would be using. He showed me all the controls, and how to set it up to scan an entire roll of microfilm. For the typed indexes, we decided to organize the scans by year and letter of the alphabet, so I created folders as such for the first roll we were scanning. I spent the end of my day keeping an eye on the scanning program, making sure it was capturing all the content on the pages. The program finds edges fairly well, but the first time we tried the roll, it did a fairly horrible job. By the time I left, it was about halfway through the roll, and was doing a decent job of it. He hopes to have time to set the machine to scan all the remaining rolls before I get back next week, so I can just do the organizing, and not sit and stare at the screen for entire days.
