Day 12 at CML

Hours: 7.5 Total Hours: 90

Yesterday, watching the scrolling scan out of the corner of my eye made me very motion-sick, so today, I set up the folder it is scanning into to sort in reverse order, so that each new scan shows in the first slot, then I squeeze the folder window to the side of the screen, so I can sort the in a larger window. Thus set up, I don’t have to watch the scrolling, I just keep an eye on the images appearing one at a time on the left side of my screen for appropriate borders. Much better.

Then I set to work sorting roll 3, keeping an eye out for pages that need re-scanned. I get through rolls 4 and 5 of the finishing up the typed up indexes, getting them all sorted and re-scanning a handful of images per roll. I email Aaron to let him know these have been finished, though I still need to do the file name changes because the computer I’m on won’t let me install the utility because I don’t have install rights. There are also a few folders that could do with some batch darkening. The microfilm I am scanning seems to be photocopies of the original typed pages.

With this all done, I still have a few hours left in my day, so I pull out the first of 78 rolls of microfilm of hand-written index cards for the years 1913-1926 and 1940 (don’t ask me, but probably the war). The scanner has a bit of trouble getting the hang of the edges, as each frame is ten index cards “lined up” in a rough two-column rectangle. After fighting with it, and mostly doing the first 200 by hand, I finally get it going smoothly. It does 200 in a row without screwing up by the time I’m ready to leave, so I cross my fingers and let it keep going, hoping it continues to finish the roll smoothly.
